Day 37: What Did Jesus Pray For?
Read John 17:1-5
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." John 17:3 (NIV)
These five verses and the 21 that follow are the words Jesus prayed as He neared the end of His life on earth. Soon He would be betrayed and arrested, mocked and tortured, and nailed to a cross.
What did He pray for? He prayed for Himself, then for His disciples, and then for all future believers – including us. But most of all, He prayed that God would be glorified, that He would be exalted, praised and honored for who He is as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
How do we glorify Him today? It starts by accepting Jesus’ gift of eternal life. And, how do we do that? Jesus is clear: It’s by knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ.
That doesn’t happen by knowing about Him, or even by reading the Bible, or going to church every Sunday, or doing good works. Yes, all those are important, but we can do them without truly knowing Him.
To know Him is to have an intimate, personal relationship with Him, which only comes when we confess and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.
If you’ve never asked Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, what better time than now to do that? And, if you do know Him, what better time than now to glorify Him by recommitting your life to Him?
