Day 11: Do Nothing on Your Own
Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." John 5:19 (NIV)
The religious leader’s outrage in John 5:18 prepares us for Jesus’ reply starting in verse 19. It reminds me of Jesus’ complete dependence on the Father. Because of his unity with God, he understood how to live the life he was called. We have the same choice. Will we reject or accept the power of Jesus to perform this miracle as God calls him. The Pharisees prided themselves on being true followers of their ancestor, Moses. The letter of the law was center in their life and for Jesus to imply Moses would accuse them of taking credit and praise from men was the true heart of the problem.
Eternal life begins when we accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Understanding Christ’s power and authority to resurrect those who believe can only be found in a growing relationship with Jesus that lives to serve others. Jesus reveals in his words and actions what is at the heart of an abiding relationship which is love. Moses did write about Jesus, but the religious leaders refused to believe Jesus when he came.
Whose praise do we seek? I know for certain that anything good that comes through me is directly because of God’s work not mine. Let us believe in Jesus as Savior not because of something we do but because of what Jesus did.
